Business finance is less about knowing the numbers and more about what the numbers are trying to tell you. But few business leaders learn these key things.

Very few business owners get into business because they have a love of finance. But having a business comes with a duty to know and understand the language of business: FINANCE.

The good news is you don’t need to become a bookkeeper or CPA to do this, you simply need to know the key numbers and ratios to look at in order to effectively run your business.

Is this you when you sit down to analyze your monthly financial statements?

  • A pit forms in your stomach as you dread opening the reports.

  • You look at the Balance Sheet and wonder what the purpose of it is.

  • You open the income statement and look at the revenue line and net profit lines and can’t figure out why the profit isn’t the same number as the bank account balance.

  • Your eyes glaze over, you get distracted and get pulled in another direction. You’re too busy to figure this out.

  • You think you are likely doing OK, but have no idea how or why.

  • You know your bookkeeper or accountant will tell you if something is really wrong, so it’s better to get back to what you are really good at, running your business.

If any of the above resonated with you, you are not alone.

What if instead, you felt:

  • Excited to see how the business performed last month.

  • Able to scan your balance sheet and quickly understand how safe or liquid your business is.

  • Proficient at looking at your Income Statement and understanding exactly what you can do to increase your net profit, and how to prepare for good/bad times ahead.

  • Sure of how much money you will have in the bank at the end of each month and/or year.

  • Able to sleep at night knowing that you know exactly how your business is doing, and how to get the most out of your bookkeeper and CPA.

  • Able to quickly spot opportunities for growth, acquisition or exit.

  • In lock step with your banker, understanding exactly what he/she wants to know about your business in order to service your loan.

  • Confident that the next generation of leadership will be able to understand why the business has been successful and how to keep it that way.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

I took this class to improve my Financial Literacy so I can speak more confidently about the company’s finances with other industry leaders, lenders, my banker, my accountant, and my team.
I learned how to create a 5-8-5 plan when forecasting your Income statement and that it’s all about the Gross Profit Margin! Increasing it by 1 – 2% can make a big difference!
I now feel SO much more confident reading and discussing financials, especially the balance sheet. The Business Mastery tool was worth every penny alone but being part of the cohort made it even better.
We are already having better conversations and we’ve changed our EOS scoreboard to now include Current Ratio, Debt-to-Equity ratio, monthly net cash flow change, and survival score!
Thank you so much for the wealth of information provided in the class. I am so happy I took it. It has given me the confidence I needed to take my business to the next level.
I consider the class exceedingly valuable. Tracy is a great presenter who obviously has a lot of real world experience, passion for the subject matter and has an exceptional ability to instruct those who do not possess her level of financial knowledge.
Tracy is a great educator and her passion for the material is very obvious. She has an exceptional ability to take her vast financial knowledge and express it in layman’s terms that even the non-financial folks in the group can grasp.
I really did NOT want to take the class to be honest because finance makes my head hurt but I am actually exceedingly glad that I did.
